Facts don't make you an authority (this does)

Why 36,000 hours on-air taught Erik Johnson that people tune in for companionship.
Hey Friend!
This week has had me thinking a lot about what actually makes people WANT to stick around, whether that is for a podcast, newsletter, or even in a friendship. Between my recent move, new routines, and trying to keep my own content honest and engaging instead of just “more,” content I’ve been asking myself if I’m actually showing up as me or just performing for value.
So it felt like perfect timing to sit down with someone who’s spent over 36,000 hours answering that exact question on a live microphone…
🔥 This week on the Authentic Voice Leadership Podcast:

I sat down with Erik K. Johnson — founder of Podcast Talent Coach, 36,000 hours of on-air radio experience, and the guy who helped a plateaued dental podcast go from $400K to $950K in a year without adding a single new strategy (Idk about you, but I am impressed…)
Erik’s whole message is this: people don’t tune in for information — they tune in for companionship. You don’t turn the radio on in the car because you need facts. You turn it on so you’re not alone.
Erik put it bluntly: your generic “six steps to success” can be replicated by AI faster than you can finish explaining them — which means information alone doesn’t make you an authority anymore. Your story does.
We also talked about the difference between what is personal vs what is private when you’re sharing your life publicly, and the simple 4-step framework Erik teaches for turning any story into content that actually moves people without burning yourself out trying to be funnier or louder than you are.
🎁 Erik also graciously put together a free mini-video series for our community:

Stay radiant, my friend,

Are you tired of creating endless content on social media and podcasts, only to feel like you’re still your industry’s best kept secret?
Do you feel like you have to be loud, funny, or have an over-the-top personality just to stand out and connect with an audience?
What if the key to growing your business and influence isn’t sharing more information, but wrapping your message in story and context?
In this episode, Dr. Leslie Davis sits down with veteran radio programmer and authority engineer Erik K. Johnson (founder of Podcast Talent Coach). With over 36,000 hours of on-air radio experience and decades of coaching broadcast talent and podcasters, Erik reveals why people don’t just tune in to learn—they tune in for companionship and connection.
Together, they unpack the shift from simply sharing information to creating context through story, the critical difference between being personal vs. private, and a simple 4-step framework for creating content that moves listeners to action without burning you out.
